My Sister's Closet
My Sister’s Closet is an SSGA initiative started in 2009 by the then secretary of student affairs to provide gently worn or used clothing at no charge to Spelman students experiencing financial difficulties. Since its inception, the space has allowed students to come and get needed clothing from professional clothing to formal attire to traditional white dresses without feeling stigmatized for receiving donated clothes.
With the help of alumnae donations, faculty, staff and student donations, the Closet has been a complete success. As secretary of student affairs for the 2010/2011 academic term, students have helped to take the closet to new heights. In February of this year, with the help of the office of Student Life and Engagement, the office of Alumnae Affairs, and the SSGA executive board, the My Sister’s Closet grand re-opening was organized. Students were able to visit the closet to help meet their needs. The
initiative was met with overwhelming response and support. As soon as word about my My Sister’s Closet spread throughout campus, students began to visit the area regularly. Now the Closet has an average of 30 visits per week. Recently, the New Jersey and Philadelphia Chapter of the National Association of Alumnae of Spelman College donated nearly 50 white dresses and shoes for students to enjoy.
“I am so pleased with the joyous responses from alumnae, faculty, staff, and students who have donated to this great initiative. I cannot express my gratitude. Each person who has helped with My Sister’s Closet should know that they have played a tremendous role in helping out our Spelman sisters.” -Stacey Mason
